알란 버틀러와 인터넷

알란 버틀러는 아마도 ‘인터넷 작가’라 불리는 것이 싫을 것이다. 그는 자신의 작품이 그런 식으로 좁은 의미에 갇히거나 분류되는 것이 내키지 않을 터. ‘인터넷 작가’라는 명칭은 인터넷만으로 작업을 하며 작품이 인터넷 상에만 존재하는 그런 작가를 암시하는 표현이기 때문이다. 버틀러의 작품은 모두 ‘실제 세계’에서도 분명 존재한다. 그렇지만 버틀러에게는 여전히 인터넷이 각별한 집착의 대상이요 뮤즈이자 매체, 그리고 꾸준한 비평의 대상임을 부인할 수는 없다. 이것은 버틀러로 하여금 뉴스를 접할 수 있게 해주고, 특정 채도의 분홍색 사인펜을 100개 확보할 수 있게 해주기도 하며, 비닐 전사로 끝없는 페퍼로니 피자 토핑을 만들어내고, 중국 공장들을 상대로 회화 주문을 가능하게 해주고, 입체 출력장치로 반자동 총기를 만들기 위한 부품 디자인을 찾아볼 수 있게 해주기도 한다. 그가 그만의 특별한 그물망으로 인터넷 정보를 걸러 이런 것도 있다는 것을 우리에게 알려준다.

버틀러는 온라인 세계에서 모은 재료를 가지고 아이디어와 오브제들을 잘게 부수고 다시 혼합해 우리가 갑자기 속하게 된 이 새로운 리얼리티를 설명하게 도와주는 미술 오브제, 비디오와 설치 작품들을 만들어낸다. 버틀러의 작품들은 우리가 의문을 갖지 않도록 훈련된 대상들에 대해 의견을 가져볼 기회를 주고 우리가 글로벌 정보라는 이 새로운 패러다임 안에서 어떻게 각자의 자리를 찾을 수 있을지 상상해 보게도 한다.

2008년, 싱가포르에서의 석사과정 시절 버틀러는 컴퓨터나 기타 기술적 보조 수단들을 일절 사양하고 대신 종이로 작업했는데, 이때 보는 이에게 속이 울렁이는 착시 현상을 일으키는 거대한 다색 드로잉들을 집요하게 만들어냈다. 그러면서 이 작품들 여기 저기에 대중매체에 대한 참고문헌들과 변조된 글로벌 브랜딩을 흩뿌려 놓았다. 그 결과는 감각적 과부하였다. 이런 미감은 작가의 작품 모두에 흐른다. 관람자들에게 레퍼런스, 소리, 색과 이미지들을 거세게 쏟아 붓는 방식으로 작가는 우리가 보통 감각기관을 폭발적으로 자극 받는 식으로 미디어 메시지를 접하는 데에 익숙해 있음을 재현한다.

2010년 더블린의 템플 바 갤러리 + 스튜디오에서 있었던 작가의 개인전은 제목이 「내가 무슨 말을 했는지에 대한 당신의 생각을 당신이 스스로 믿는 줄은 아는데, 당신이 들은 것은 내가 뜻한 바가 아니었음을 당신이 아는지모르겠다」였다.이한줄의대사는베트남전쟁이가장암울하게치닫고있을때미국무부장관로버트 맥클로스키(Robert McCloskey)가 정오에 가진 정기 브리핑에서 한 말로 알려져 있다. 이런 얼버무리기 식 화법은 버틀러의 작품에 나타나는 다른 ‘피드백 고리’들을 연상시키기도 한다. 이는 작가의 드로잉들과 매우 유사한 방법으로 독자를 당황하고 혼란스럽게 하는 효과가 있다. 이 전시의 일부로 벽면들은 갤러리 전체의 격자무늬에 일정 간격으로 놓여진검정색의비닐네모들로덮였고,이는작가가흰배경에격자형식으로놓인검은네모들사이로눈에잘 잡히지 않고 모호하게 생긴 점들이 나타나는 그 유명하도록 미식거리게 하는 착시효과 그림의 대형 버전을 만든 것이다. 관객들을 마치 시험이라도 하듯 이렇게 대한 것은 작가가 미술계 전반에 대해 가진 태도를 엿보게 해주는데, 이는 곧 작가에게는 자신이 놓인 시스템들이 거의 역겨울 지경인 하나의 밀고 당김의 관계임을 의미한다.

작가의 작품들에서 인터넷이 가진 편재성은 그것이 개발국들에서 사는 우리의 삶 속에 편재함을 나타내고 있다. 인터넷 접속은 이제 전기나 흐르는 물처럼 산업과 일상 생활 모두에 필수적인 것으로 인식되고 있는데, 이에 대해 버틀러는 우리는 과연 실제로 우리가 생각하는 만큼 정보를 자유롭게 얻고 있는가를 묻고, 우리로 하여금 스스로 ‘그래서 이 많은 정보는 다 가져서 무얼 한단 말인가?’는 의문을 갖게 한다.
