Endlings (2023-)
Endlings (2023-) is a series of sculptures that are made up of indoor plant growing tents, which act as artificial light environments for an array of laser-etched mirrors that are suspended from motors in the ceiling of the tents. The mirrors rotate causing the laser-etched images to disappear and reappear depending on the viewer's proximity to the objects. The images on the surface of the mirror planes are derived from 19th Century botanical illustrations of flora specimens. Specifically, the illustrations are old enough to have gone out of copyright, and are now in the public domain, but during this time all these plants have become extinct. As such, these plants only exist today in image form. The word 'Endlings' is a proposed term for the last example of an endangered species.
